Condemnation, Correction or Confusion?
Condemnation: a statement or expression of very strong and definite criticism or disapproval. Romans 8:1 "There is therefore now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus" (preachers and Christians love this excerpt of this verse and the crowd shouts and some run around the sanctuary) but the verse goes on to include,"who walk not after the flesh, but after The Spirit" So if you are indeed in Christ, free from condemnation then you walk after The Spirit and there is no ability to be condemned for walking in the flesh - flesh which often says it's in Christ but leaves room to be condemned because they're walking in the flesh, not in the Spirit, and therefore not in Christ. We see confirmation of this in Christ's words to some who claim to know Him, and when they die His answer will be, "I never knew you, depart from Me". We also see it in the Parable of the Ten Virgins, who are a depiction of the Church/Body of Christ where only half enter.-> 50%, 1/2, 0.5 If someone, particularly a Christian, tells you you're wrong in your actions or words or beliefs, there is a reason. They care and love you enough to risk losing you as a friend because the long term consequences are great. How will they hear without a preacher? If iron sharpens iron, then something was dull. If needing of sharpening, then condemnation is the tool to dictate what is dull. Those who walk in the Spirit will show forth daily, moment-by-moment holiness. This is brought about by consciously choosing by faith to rely on the Holy Spirit to guide in thought, word, and deed. Failure to rely on the Holy Spirit's guidance will result in a believer not living up to the calling and standing that salvation provides. We can know that we are walking in the Spirit if our lives are showing forth the fruit of the Spirit which is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To be "in Christ" means we have accepted His sacrifice as payment for our own sin. Our rap sheets contain every sinful thought, attitude or action we have ever committed, now wiped clean where we can have communion and fellowship with Him. He sees us as He sees His son, and we are left to work out this salvation with fear and trembling. Why is this phrase included with a free gift Grace provides? Because walking after The Spirit is not automatic. This brings us to the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. Like gravity has a law, there is spiritual law. We get the phrase, what goes up must come down. We see particles in space clump and gather through the law of gravity. God is all about if-then clauses. If you do this, I will do this. This is also how covenant works. There is effort and actions at work. I can not get gravity to work if opposition keeps it from doing its job. A rocket fights against gravity much the way walking after the flesh and its desires keeps spiritual laws from being dominant. Is the atheist able to say all things work together for good? Am I blessed going in and going out without tithing? God does not hear a man's prayer if that man mistreats his wife. So we see if someone walks after the Spirit, they are not subject to condemnation because they are in Christ and have no need for anyone to teach them. There are only two choices and possibilities. Walking after the Spirit or walking after the flesh. Eating from the table of The Lord, or the table of demons. Continuing in Romans 8, depending which path you walk you mind the things found on the path. This doesn't mean you can't talk about things on the other paths. "Minding" something refers to keeping it in your heart. Many profess to be 'in Christ'. It's a popular phrase in church and important as a teaching about the benefits of salvation, but it is not automatic. "If you abide in Me and My Words abide in you" Big 'if' right there spoken to believers and is referring to whether you love Jesus and obey His commands. 'Abide' is the same as 'in Christ' the same as 'obey' is the same as 'belief'. They don't register to our minds as outward action and purposeful intent, do they? I live in my home. I abide there. It isn't automatic, though. I have to either stay here or return. If everything I could ever need were here at home, I would never leave or have a reason to leave. That's salvation. Nothing missing and nothing broken. If I walk after the Spirit and am therefore in Christ, having no reason to leave and nothing out of line (salvation) I will not be under condemnation being in the will of God, the Word of God, abiding in Him, and obeying believing. God may convict me when things are not right. People may condemn me if things are not right. It's up to me to remain free from both. This is accomplished by walking in The Spirit.
