The Micromanaging Narcissist
I worked 9 years installing above ground pools. One could say I don't need instruction at this point and should be a value to an employer. Well, not to a micro managing narcissist! With my name on the top of the contract, I have control and authority over the job and have proved my ability on countless occasions with happy customers who still enjoy their pools today. That is until Dennis shows up. He insists on doing things in his order, his way, his technique which takes longer and has unnecessary steps. Not only that, he changes the order of steps and interjects new ones. When any resistance is shown, he yells, swears at me, makes statements like, "I am ordering you..." He idolizes Caesar and feels the Roman Empire was the best form of government. A former Grumman employee who worked on F-16's takes that mentality to pool installation and is jealous when someone like me comes along and improves on time, resource use, and technique. I find this problem often rather than an appreciation for my ability to improve on methods. He called me friend and brother but never once invited me to off work events and parties at his home though I worked in and outside of his home, found his wife hanging in his garage from her bathrobe strap having hung herself when we arrived one day and I continually showed loyalty and patience with him, ending in my defending myself with equal yelling in customer's back yards to the point they asked if I could be their pool guy because he isn't much different with them. Today, we no longer speak and he has a drug user and various ever changing helpers with no experience as his staff. He orders mutual friends if they use me on their side jobs he won't use them on his (blackmail). Other installers left him years ago. Many people asked me how I remained with him or could work with him. Finding a new employer, it took 2 weeks to adjust to a normal work environment where I am given control over myself and only the end result is of interest. There is no swearing. No yelling. And I receive compliments and am told, "Perfect. That's just what I wanted."
